In principle, most parasols can be opened and used even on windy days. However, in order to achieve the highest possible wind stability for parasols, for example on the terrace or in the garden, it is advisable to use ground sleeves or ground dowels. They can be used to firmly anchor the sun protection into the ground. Other factors that influence the stability of an umbrella include the following:
· Metal instead of plastic: Windproof parasols are characterized by a high-quality construction with partially reinforced struts. Some have the covering fixed along the entire length of the strut, which in turn ensures more stability. Many wind-stable parasols are heavier, have a higher proportion of aluminum and fewer plastic components. It pays off to buy wind-stable and stable parasols, especially in the catering industry, as they are generally more durable.
· Mast thickness: If your parasol is large, you should also choose the thickest possible mast thickness of at least 55mm diameter. As a general rule: the larger the parasol is, the greater the mast thickness should be. For example, a garden parasol with a thin parasol pole and a small amount of metal will not always be able to withstand the same wind load as a large catering parasol that has a thick and heavy pole.
In the race for wind stability, the classic center mast parasols are ahead. They are less susceptible to wind than cantilever parasols. And there is a specific reason for this: As the name suggests, the center of gravity of the center mast parasols is in the middle, so that the wind forces can be distributed evenly. This means that the wind cannot easily get under the parasol. With cantilever parasols, however, the parasol stand is located on the side. This means that you can make full use of the space under the parasol as there is no stick in the way, but the usually swinging suspension and the inclined parasol offer a larger surface area for the wind to attack. Cantilever parasols can therefore tip over more easily in gusts of wind than center-mast parasols.
Proper anchoring is the be-all and end-all when it comes to the stability of parasols. To ensure that your parasol is as robust as possible and can withstand light gusts of wind, there are two options: Either anchor it using ground sockets or in a solid parasol stand.
· Ground sleeves: Ground sleeves only make your parasol stable if they are placed correctly. If you work inaccurately and place the anchor crookedly in the ground, the parasol will be crooked. A correction afterwards is not only annoying, but also very time-consuming. Ground sockets have the advantage that they are more space-saving than parasol stands.
· Parasol stand: If you want to remain flexible when positioning and moving your parasol, we recommend a solid parasol base made of concrete or granite or a concrete slab parasol stand. If parasol stands are too small or light, there is a risk that your parasol will not be able to withstand light gusts and will tip over or fly away.
In most cases, anchoring with ground sockets is safer than using a heavy parasol stand. If you use a cantilever parasol, you can also secure it with a special canopy stabilizer or a special wind lock to ensure more stability and support in light winds. In our range you will find wind protection made from robust, black polyester tape for your cantilever parasol. It reduces the swaying movements of the canopy and thus the strain on the gesture
Here you will find the right accessories for the best possible hold of our parasols
Even for the most stable parasol, it is advisable to secure it well against the wind and keep it closed when the wind comes up. In order to avoid damage and not provide the wind with an unnecessary target, the open parasol should never be left unattended and should always be closed, especially in the event of impending storms. A suitable protective cover offers additional protection. This prevents the fabric fibers from rubbing against each other due to fluttering, which could potentially cause them to wear out. Wind damage to your parasol is generally not covered by our warranty as a parasol manufacturer. This makes it all the more important to equip your parasol with the right accessories and to ensure good wind protection. In our corresponding accessories category you are guaranteed to find the right product for every type of parasol.
